Consumer Awareness
An important element in the RUM Project applications is Consumer Awareness.
Consumers have been accustomed to disposing of unwanted and out-of-date medicines using general waste and sewerage options.
Having regard to the potential dangers both in retaining these medicines in the home, and environmental considerations, consumers need to be aware of the appropriate option for disposable – and to be encouraged to use this option.
In July 2001 an extensive Consumer Awareness Campaign was conducted in New South Wales. Funded by the Department for the Environment, the campaign presented the RUM Project to health professionals and consumers across the State.
Funding from the New South Wales Government was $670,000.
Other States and Territories have been, or will be, contacted in an effort to expand the understanding and the use of the RUM Project facilities. Current responses in Western Australia and South Australia indicate a strong possibility for assistance for consumer awareness.
Manufacturers have demonstrated support for the awareness proposals with significant industry assistance from a small group of manufactures. The RUM Project remains confident that manufacturers will appreciate the value in contributing to this increase in public awareness.
